Winter Boat Mooring Cove 5, Unit 62.
Winter Boat Mooring.
We are Mel Smothers and Liz Hansen at unit 62, Cove 5. We will be adversely affected with the
rule change being considered to disallow sailboats from docking through the winter. We live
with our 26’ sail boat, Lost Bird, docked next to our home. This arrangement was our retirement
goal. We are year-round residents of the Tahoe Keys.
We have been conscientious boat owners for 15 yrs. winterizing and purchasing a heavy cover
with armature that sheds snow for the “Bird.” We are an informed couple who knows how to
maintain a sailboat through the winter that includes shoveling the snow off our “Bird” and
adjusting dock lines as the lake rises in the spring.
To be in the Keys has taken a lifetime of commitment to our Tahoe Keys dream. We’re asking you
to understand the meaning of our living a mountain life with our sailboat in the Keys.
The cost of dry docking our 26’ sailboat with its keel, is likely more than $6,000 annually. This is
a heavy additional expense to live here.
We are also facing many additional costs/assessments to maintain our lifestyle in the Tahoe
Keys. This one we feel is unnecessary and unaffordable for us.
Since this new rule only affects a few boats, we are asking you to compromise. Is it possible the
rules committee grant us an exception and grandfather our boat in?
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Mel and Liz
